Managing expansion of the infrastructure network

A double-decker train approaches a tunnel along a viaduct in the mountains.
The FOT plans and coordinates the railway expansion programme.

The basis of a good public transport service and railway freight service is high-quality, efficiently run infrastructure. The FOT

  • is responsible for strategic service and infrastructure planning for the development of the Swiss rail network
  • aligns this with spatial planning and the planning of the road network
  • supervises, coordinates and manages the implementation of rail construction projects
  • represents the Confederation as client in these projects
  • strives to ensure the projects are carried out properly, on time and within budget
  • issues authorisation for railway infrastructure buildings, cable-car installations, landing points for public shipping, and for trolleybus installations
  • issues operating licences and infrastructure concessions
  • issues network access licences and safety certificates for railway undertakings.
