The diversity of public transport

Public transport in Switzerland is based on different modes of transport: in addition to railways, trams and buses, ships and cableways also fall within the remit of the FOT. The FOT is responsible for the freight services provided by these modes of transport, as well as for the legal frameworks for goods transport by road.

Personenzug

Railways

The railways are the backbone of Swiss public transport.

Tram

Tram and bus

Trams and buses play an important role in cities – and beyond.

Seilbahn

Cableways

Cableways are particularly important for tourism.

Schiff

Navigation

Shipping – important for excursions and for transporting goods on the Rhine

Lastwagen

Goods transport by road

Freight transport by road requires conditions to be harmonised with the EU.
