International coordination

The flags of Switzerland and the EU adorn the Federal Palace.
Switzerland coordinates rail and road traffic with the EU under the Overland Transport Agreement.

Many rail, bus, shipping and tram routes operate across national borders, as does a large proportion of lorry traffic. As a small country in the heart of Europe, it is crucial that Switzerland coordinate these various forms of transport and its transport policy with both the EU and its neighbours. This enables it to safeguard its interests and provide an efficient transport system. The FOT represents Switzerland’s transport policy interests and coordinates international road and rail traffic (‘overland transport’). It draws up and implements international agreements and arrangements, and represents Switzerland in various international bodies.
