To create better connections to the European high-speed network, the Confederation has so far invested about CHF 1.1 billion in the railway infrastructure. Where it is useful and in Switzerland’s interests, the Confederation has also contributed to funding extensions in neighbouring countries. This has shortened journey times between Switzerland and cities such as Paris, Lyon, Munich, Ulm and Stuttgart, sometimes significantly. For example, the journey from Basel to Paris is now half an hour quicker than it was in 2011. At the end of 2020, the journey time to Munich fell from 4 hours and 45 minutes to around 4 hours (due to construction sites). In a second phase – from December 2021 – the journey time will be cut to 3 hours and 30 minutes.
