Trams and buses play an important role in local and regional transport, and buses also play an increasingly important one in international and national scheduled services.

Together with the cantons, the FOT orders and finances the bus and tram (as well as rail) services, while local traffic is ordered and paid for by cantonal and municipal bodies.

The FOT also has an important position as the regulatory authority for international and national scheduled bus services.

The FOT issues the necessary approvals to companies carrying out passenger transport by road.  The FOT is also responsible for technical approvals for tram and bus vehicles. In addition, it authorises extensions and alterations of trolleybus infrastructure.

Note too that it is not just buses that operate internationally – there are also some cross-border tram lines, as in Basel.
