The central role of the railways

Railways are the cornerstone of public transport in Switzerland. Thanks to targeted expansion and continuous modernisation, both passenger and freight transport meet the highest standards.

The graphic shows that Swiss people travel an average of over 2,179 kilometers by train every year. This is more than in any other European country.

No one else enjoys rail travel as much, or travels as often, as the Swiss. On average we travel by rail 68 times a year, covering about 2179 km. According to the year 2022. Thanks to the gradual commissioning of new, more efficient railway infrastructure such as the Zurich cross-city link, new lines in Geneva and the base tunnels through the Alps, demand has continued to rise. Rail freight has also expanded massively. Current prognoses suggest that this enormous growth in passenger and freight transport by rail will continue.

The FOT is the authority that monitors safety, and is thus responsible for rail transport continuing to maintain a high safety level. The FOT plans and supports further expansion and is also the licensing authority for rail construction projects. In addition, it regulates access to the rail network and approves new rolling stock.

Expansion programmes

The expansion and development of the railway network is carried out step by step in the form of programmes managed by the FOT. The FOT also ensures the implementation of the long-term strategy.

Passenger Traffic

Swiss people are a nation of train riders. Public support for rail transport is correspondingly broad. The federal government finances passenger transport where it is not self-sustaining.

Two pie charts show the modal split in freight transport in Switzerland. The left-hand chart shows transalpine freight transport in 2024 (FOT): 70% by rail, 30% by road. The right-hand chart shows total freight transport in Switzerland in 2023 (FSO): 38% by rail, 62% by road.
