One-third of all energy consumed in Switzerland is related to transportation. This is why transportation constitutes a core theme in the Energy Strategy 2050, with which the Federal Council gradually wants to pull out from using nuclear energy. The strategy provides that the entire transport sector cut its energy consumption in half by the year 2050.
Because the public transport is very energy efficient, it can be an important asset in achieving the goals of the Energy Strategy. Hence, the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) was tasked with spelling out the Federal Council’s Energy Strategy in specific terms, according to its responsibilities. To that end, the FOT has launched the “Energy Strategy for Public Transport 2050 (ESPT 2050)” programme.
