A third of all energy consumed in Switzerland is related to transport. This is why transport is a core theme in the Energy Strategy 2050 through which the Federal Council aims to reduce energy consumption, improve energy efficiency and encourage the use of renewable forms of energy. By 2035, energy consumption per capita should be 43% lower than in 2000.
As public transport is extremely energy efficient, it can be an important asset in achieving the goals set out in the Energy Strategy. The Federal Office of Transport (FOT) has been given the task of spelling out the Federal Council’s Energy Strategy in its area of responsibility. To that end, the FOT launched the “Energy Strategy for Public Transport 2050 (ESPT 2050)” programme.
