International agreements

For some years, the FOT has been collaborating closely with the National Safety Authorities (NSA) of neighbouring countries. Through bilateral contacts Switzerland is pursing the goal of achieving interoperability on her normal-gauge network.

The FOT has so far carried out a systematic comparison of national requirements for rolling stock with seven European NSA (Austria, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands). Harmonised approval processes have been treated with cross acceptance in concrete projects with four countries.

There is a bilateral agreement with Germany, regulating simplified access to the network in border traffic.

Switzerland has signed an agreement with Germany simplifying the process of approval of engine drivers. Mutual recognition of licences across the whole network is also planned.

Agreements between Switzerland and further European countries are in preparation.
