Expansion step 2035

The Federal Council has proposed projects costing around CHF 11.5 billion for Expansion step 2035. These will enable the foreseeable overload on various lines to be reduced. The planned projects include the Brütten tunnel, Zimmerberg base tunnel II, and extensions between Yverdon, Lausanne and Geneva.

Expansion step 2025

The rail expansion step 2025 was agreed as part of the Project to fund and expand rail infrastructure (FERI). This intends to increase capacity in the major rail hubs such as Geneva, Basel and Bern, as well as many other places. Expansion step 2025 comprises measures costing CHF 6.4 billion.

NRLA

The three NRLA base tunnels through the Gotthard, Lötschberg and Ceneri are creating a level-track route through the Alps. This increases the attractiveness of transalpine rail freight and ensures shorter travel times for passengers. The NRLA is costing around CHF 23 billion; it will be completed by the end of 2020.

ZEB

ZEB continues the hub concept of “Bahn 2000”. Projects to the tune of CHF 5.4 billion will lead to better connections by 2025, and a denser service with more capacity. All regions of the country will benefit. In terms of freight traffic, the ZEB will enable faster speeds and an extension of capacity on the north-south axis.

4-metre corridor

So that semi-trailers with a corner height of 4 metres can be transported by rail from Northern Europe to the transhipment terminals in Northern Italy, older tunnels on the Gotthard route are being enlarged and other obstacles removed. The 4-metre corridor will be completed by the end of 2020 and cost a maximum of CHF 990 million.

High-speed connection

For a better connection to the European high-speed network, the Confederation is investing about CHF 1.1 billion in the railway network up to the end of 2020. In the interests of Switzerland as a location for business and tourism, this will shorten journey times to Paris, Lyon, Munich, Ulm and Stuttgart, sometimes significantly.

Noise reduction on the railways

The noise abatement programme has enabled the complete Swiss rolling stock to be fitted with quiet brakes. In addition, about 276 km of noise barriers and more than 70,000 sound-insulating windows have been installed. The second stage will be a general ban on noisy goods wagons on the Swiss network by 2020.
