Process-oriented organisation for greater efficiency and productivity

The Federal Office of Transport is an agency within the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC). It deals with all issues related to Swiss transport policy in terms of public transport and is jointly responsible for the implementation of the government’s traffic transfer policy (the transfer of freight traffic from road to rail). It is committed to ensuring efficient public transport both as a designer of transport services and as a supervisory authority with regard to matters of safety. In addition, the FOT is responsible, partially together with the cantons, for the financing of public transport, both in terms of operations and infrastructure. The agency is headquartered in the DETEC administrative centre in Ittigen near Bern and employs approximately 290 people (as at end of may 2012).

The organisation of the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) is based on core business processes and is characterised by a clear separation between planning and financing. In addition, safety supervision has been given greater importance than before.

The FOT is divided into 5 divisions.

• Policy
• Financing
• Safety
• Infrastructure
• Business Administration and Organisation
