A formal opening ceremony in mid-2016 will not only mark the completion of the Gotthard base tunnel but also a milestone in the implementation of Switzerland's transport policy. The CHF 12 billion project, commissioned and overseen by the Federal government, is an extremely challenging and complex one from an engineering point of view. The resulting tunnel will, however, allow more goods to be transported through the Alps - at higher speeds and using fewer locomotives. And, once work on the Ceneri base tunnel and the approach routes has been completed, the journey between the North and South of Switzerland will be three-quarters of an hour faster for passenger trains.
